Concept of the product and why:
This is a competitive fantasy block game which can be played as 1 or 2 players over an internet connection. The field grid is 11×11 and there are 10 different types of block designs. Out of the 10 types of blocks, the block design with over 5 block units will contain a “Power Ball” to collect for the character. Each player on a device owns one character to build and grow. The character can branch into 4 general classes: Melee, Mage, Ranger, Priest. Later each class will branch into specialization twice. Skills must be unlocked then purchased and built.
The goal is to design a detailed game concept with wireframe, flowchart, and UI mock up for game developers to build. I also wanted to create a system to balance the game for optimal long lasting enjoyment.
Design process, obstacles, and solution:
Battleblock was inspired by two puzzle block games, Battle Gaiden and Tens. Mixing unique character skills with block game came from Battle Gaiden while the layout block design was inspired by Tens. The first biggest obstacle of designing this game is fitting all of the content into a small phone interface where iPhone 5 users can still enjoy the game. Traditionally, Battle Gaiden is a 2 player game on consoles, so the 2 players can view each other’s screen. The solution to this is to slide the screen to view the opponent while keeping a thumbnail of their character with expressions to for a competitive feel. The second challenge is to stay within legal rights of not infringing intellectual property. Since Tetris has already patents the block patterns, next piece, and 10×10 field. The solution to this was to create new block designs which works in favor to mobile interactivity because the block are dropped on the field by dragging with the finger. The next piece concept was expand to “next two piece”. And the 10×10 field was expanded to 11×11.
